How do we do this? GLAMs - Modeling out data from the Artists Files to the Zs: Zebra Genomes, 中國人 (Zhongguo ren), Zulu Kingdom, in the Smithsonian Institution

Log in to save this to your schedule, view media, leave feedback and see who's attending!

The Smithsonian has a wide variety of information to model as linked data. With lessons learned from participating in the Program for Cooperative Cataloging's (PCC) Wikidata project, the presenters hope to develop a local Wikibase instance that will provide a better internal linked data system across the Institution. The focus of their data modeling is museums (the buildings and their collections) and people, both living and historical. Discussion will center on preferred properties for describing the Smithsonian’s collections, proposals to create new Wikidata properties for improved modeling of GLAM data, as well as the challenges arising from describing culturally sensitive information (such as ethnic and gender identities of persons) across topics as diverse as Art and Artists Files, Chinese Ancestors Portraits, African ethnic terms, and Smithsonian researchers/scholars.
